If you are new to Big Data and you are a techie then Big Data University (BDU) is the place for you. It has a series of structured courses that give you an excellent introduction to the technologies. BDU partners with Amazon Web Services and RightScale to give you servers in the cloud so that you can work hands-on without the need for servers of your own.
Courses include:

- Hadoop in the Amazon Cloud
- Hadoop Reporting and Analysis
- Text Analytics Essentials
IBM is a major contributor to Big Data University and it shows. There are several DB2 courses and many of the free resources are written by IBM. It is all very high quality from technical and informational perspectives and there is no heavy handed selling going on. So hats off and thank you to IBM for providing a great resource.
You can work on a packaged set of tools that includes hadoop, jaql and hive. Instruction is delivered through online presentations and is followed by labs and tests.
